Beer and Cheese, Without the Pint

Beer and cheese is a classic combination, so putting a little of one into a chutney for the other makes rather good sense.

Highfield Preserves Real Ale Chutney is rich, fruity and savoury, with the ale bringing a lovely malty depth alongside sweet fruit, onion and tangy vinegar.

It’s a proper, robust chutney — the sort I’d reach for with a mature British cheese rather than something particularly delicate. There’s sweetness, acidity and plenty of savoury flavour, but it’s that underlying maltiness that makes this one a little different.

And you don’t even have to like drinking beer to appreciate it.

What Cheese Goes with Real Ale Chutney?

For me, this belongs firmly alongside big British cheese.

• Mature Cheddar – This is where I’d start. Keen’s Extra Mature Cheddar has plenty of flavour to stand alongside the chutney, while the malty ale notes make the whole combination feel very British indeed.
• Blue Stilton PDO – Colston Bassett Blue Stilton PDO is another great match. Salty blue cheese, fruity chutney and malt is a combination with plenty going on.
• Soft cheese – Try it with Baron Bigod or Tunworth. The chutney’s acidity works particularly well against a beautifully ripe, creamy cheese.
• Rutland Red – Rutland Red gives you another comforting British combination, with the malty chutney sitting very happily alongside its savoury flavours.

It’s also excellent in a cheese sandwich, alongside a Ploughman’s or spooned into a toastie — basically anywhere that cheese and chutney already seem like a good idea.

Jen’s note: I’m not actually a beer drinker, which perhaps makes me an unlikely person to recommend Real Ale Chutney. But I do know that beer and cheese can be brilliant together — I’ve hosted enough beer and cheese tastings to know that! This gives you some of those lovely malty flavours without me having to drink the pint.
