Some combinations really don’t need messing about with.

Tracklements Perfect Ploughman’s Pickle is exactly the sort of pickle you want alongside a good piece of British cheese: tangy, slightly sweet, gently spiced and packed with chunky vegetables.

It’s inspired, unsurprisingly, by the classic Ploughman’s lunch — cheese, pickle and good bread — and that’s still probably my favourite way to eat it.

No elaborate cheeseboard required. Just cut yourself a decent piece of Cheddar, find some crusty bread and open the jar.

Lunch.

What Cheese Goes with Ploughman’s Pickle?

This is very much at home with traditional British hard cheeses.

• Mature Cheddar – Surely the classic. Westcombe Cheddar with a spoonful of pickle and some crusty bread is exactly what a Ploughman’s should be.
• Rutland Red – Rutland Red is another lovely choice. Its buttery, savoury character works brilliantly with the sweet acidity of the pickle.
• Double Gloucester – Double Gloucester and pickle just feels properly British. Simple, satisfying and very difficult to improve upon.
• Blue Stilton PDO – If you fancy something a little different, try Colston Bassett Blue Stilton PDO. The sweet, tangy pickle is surprisingly good alongside that rich, salty blue.

And obviously it belongs in sandwiches too. Cheese, pickle and bread have been keeping each other company for a very long time, and I see absolutely no reason to interfere.

Jen’s note: Give me good Cheddar, proper bread and a spoonful of pickle and I’m quite happy. It might not be the most glamorous lunch in the world, but sometimes the old combinations are classics because they simply work.
