Isle of Mull Cheddar is one of our strongest cheddars. It has a unique flavour which is savoury and often considered boozy due to the dairy cows being fed on the grains from the nearby whiskey distillery.

Description

Isle of Mull Cheddar cheese is made by the Reade family who own the only dairy on the island. Their cheddar has a full flavour and is a bit drier than our other cheddars. It has a unique taste due to the fact that the dairy’s cows are fed on grains from the nearby Tobermory whiskey distillery.

Chris Reade and her husband Jeff originally farmed in Somerset but they fell in love with the Isle of Mull and relocated their family there in 1979. Over the years they have expanded their dairy herd and slowly switched from mainly producing milk for the Islanders to being 100% cheesemakers. Today there are over 300 cows within their herd and the cheddar they produce is sold all over the world.

More often than not the Isle of Mull Cheddar is one of the strongest cheddars that we have in our counter. I often describe it as having a flavour that makes your mouth water!

Like many of our artisan farmhouse cheddars the Isle of Mull can develop blue veins within its paste. These are completely edible and are purely indicative of the age of the cheese and its handmade qualities.

Try this cheese in the traditional Scottish way with a spoonful of chutney, a couple of oatcakes and a dram of single malt whiskey!
