Godminster cheddar cheese has a distinctive burgundy wax which hides the smooth cheddar within.
Godminster cheddar is an organic cheese made in Bruton, Somerset. The cheese is made from a 90-year-old recipe using milk from a herd of cows who graze on Godminster farm. It is instantly recognisable, and its wax coating makes it stand out on a cheeseboard. The farm at Godminster was certified as organic in 1999. The whole farm is run on ecologically friendly principles and the milk produced by its 320 organic dairy cows is second to none. The cows produce a deliciously rich, creamy milk which is then used in the cheese making process. The cheesemakers believe that both the freshness of the milk and the sustainable approach they have to farming have a direct impact on the quality of their cheese and so the whole farm is managed with a view to creating a self-sustainable landscape. You really can taste the result of this labour of love within the cheese.
When you first take a bite of this cheese its rich, mellow flavour instantly fills your mouth and you can’t help but want to taste a bit more. Godminster cheese is intensely creamy with a long, smooth finish. It is so popular that it won the Nation’s Favourite Organic Product in 2019.
Like so many good quality cheddars Godminster pairs fabulously well with medium dry ciders.
