Fig, Cheese… and Apparently Mince Pies

There are some flavours that just seem destined to end up next to cheese, and fig is definitely one of them.

Tracklements Sticky Fig Relish is rich, fruity and — as the name suggests — wonderfully sticky, with pieces of fig and a gentle warmth from cinnamon. There’s enough acidity to balance the sweetness, but this is definitely at the richer end of the chutney spectrum.

Which makes it particularly good with salty cheese.

And although we sell it for cheese, I should probably confess that it’s also rather good with mince pies. More on that later…

What Cheese Goes with Sticky Fig Relish?

• Blue cheese – This would be my first choice. Something salty like Strathdon Blue with sweet, sticky fig is a brilliant combination. Stilton would be equally happy here.
• Goat’s cheese – Fig and goat’s cheese is a classic pairing for good reason. The fresh acidity of the cheese balances all that lovely figgy sweetness.
• Brie or Camembert – Rich, creamy soft cheese with sticky fig is another very easy win, particularly if the cheese is beautifully ripe.
• Sheep’s milk cheese – Sheep Rustler brings firmer texture and lovely savoury, nutty flavours to contrast with the fruit.

It’s useful beyond the cheeseboard too. Add it to a toastie or sandwich, serve it alongside cold meats or — and this is where things get interesting — put a little with a warm mince pie.

And About Those Mince Pies…

Try warming a mince pie and serving it with a little Sticky Fig Relish and a piece of blue cheese.

Yes, cheese with mince pies.

If you’ve never tried it, don’t dismiss it until you have. Sweet dried fruit, warm spice and salty blue cheese make considerably more sense together than you might imagine.

Jen’s note: I know putting cheese with a mince pie sounds slightly odd if you didn’t grow up doing it, but trust me on this one. Warm mince pie, a little Sticky Fig Relish and a piece of blue cheese. Christmas suddenly gets considerably more interesting.
