There are crackers, and then there are the crackers you always make sure you’ve got in the cupboard.

Bath Squares from The Fine Cheese Co. are a staple in our house. They’re crisp, light and sturdy enough to hold a decent piece of cheese — which is surely one of the most important jobs of a cracker.

Inspired by the traditional Bath Oliver biscuit, they’re square, beautifully crisp and have a gentle savoury, slightly buttery flavour. There’s enough flavour to make them interesting, but not so much that they start competing with whatever cheese you’ve put on top.

And that’s really why I like them. They work with pretty much everything.

What Cheese Goes with Bath Squares?

The short answer is almost anything.

• Soft cheese – Try them with Brie, Camembert or a creamy goat’s cheese. The crisp cracker is particularly good against a soft, ripe cheese.
• Hard cheese – Cheddar, Comté PDO and Le Gruyère AOP all work brilliantly.
• Blue cheese – Add a piece of Blue Stilton PDO or Roquefort PDO. The cracker stays firmly in the background and lets the blue cheese do the talking.

They’re also sturdy enough for a spoonful of chutney without immediately collapsing in your hand. An underrated quality in a cracker.

Jen’s note: Bath Squares really are a staple in our house. They’re the crackers I reach for when I don’t know exactly which cheeses we’re going to eat because I know they’ll work with pretty much all of them. And they’re equally good with a bit of salami, some chutney or simply eaten straight from the box.
