Tracklements Damson Fruit Cheese is made with damsons — those small, dark members of the plum family — and has a lovely deep, fruity flavour with enough tartness to stop all that richness becoming too sweet.

It’s darker and more jammy than quince or gooseberry, with that unmistakable plumminess that makes it particularly good with mature, salty and creamy cheeses.

This is the one I’d reach for when I want something a little richer alongside my cheese.

What Cheese Goes with Damson?

Damson is surprisingly versatile, but there are a few combinations that really work.

• Soft cheese – A ripe Brie or Camembert with damson is a lovely thing. Rich, creamy cheese against dark, slightly tart fruit is a very easy pairing to enjoy.
• Blue cheese – Blue Stilton PDO is particularly good. Salty blue cheese loves something sweet alongside it, and the deeper fruitiness of damson gives you a rather different pairing from the usual Port or fig.
• Mature Cheddar – Give me a good farmhouse Cheddar with a little damson and I’m very happy. The savoury complexity of the cheese works beautifully with that rich plum fruit.
• Goat’s cheese – Damson also works surprisingly well with goat’s cheese, where the fresh acidity of the cheese stops the pairing becoming too sweet.

You don’t need very much of it either. A little alongside the cheese is enough — we’re pairing it with the cheese, not burying the cheese underneath it.

Jen’s note: Of the fruit cheeses, damson is the one I’d reach for with a proper mature Cheddar. There’s something about that dark, slightly tart plumminess alongside a really good Cheddar that just works. And frankly, any excuse to eat another piece of Cheddar is fine by me.
