The Jar That Goes with Almost Everything

Some chutneys are bought for a particular cheese. Tomato chutney is the one you buy and then discover you’re putting on everything.

Highfield Preserves Tomato Chutney is rich, savoury and gently sweet, with ripe tomatoes and onions at its heart, followed by a little warmth from ginger and chilli and enough vinegar to keep everything nicely balanced.

It’s not particularly fiery and it’s not overly sweet. It’s simply a really good, savoury chutney — which is probably why it’s so useful.

Put it on a cheeseboard, in a sandwich, next to a pork pie or into a toastie. Frankly, once the jar is open, you’ll probably find your own excuses.

What Cheese Goes with Tomato Chutney?

The easy answer is most of them, but there are a few particularly good places to start.

• Mature Cheddar – Cheese and tomato is hardly a revolutionary idea, but there’s a reason it works. A good mature Cheddar with a spoonful of tomato chutney and some crusty bread is very difficult to improve upon.
• Soft cheese – Brie or Camembert works beautifully, with the tangy tomato and gentle spice bringing a bit of contrast to all that creamy richness.
• Blue cheese – Try it with Blue Stilton PDO. You get salty, savoury blue cheese against sweet tomato, vinegar and a little warmth from the chilli.
• Goat’s cheese – Tomato and goat’s cheese are natural friends, and the chutney brings enough sweetness and acidity to make a very simple combination rather lovely.

And this is definitely one to keep around for lunches. It’s brilliant with cold meats, pork pies and savoury pastries, and I’d happily put it into a cheese toastie.
