Montgomery Farmhouse Cheddar Cheese

About Montgomery Farmhouse Cheddar Cheese

Jamie Montgomery is the third generation of his family to farm in North Cadbury in the heart of Somerset. His cheddar is possibly the most famous of all West Country Farmhouse Cheddars and many would say it is the best cheddar there is. (We love it so much that we had a 6kg ring of it as the base of our cheese wedding cake!) Jamie has a herd of 140 Holstein cows on his farm. The damp climate of Somerset produces wonderfully lush grass which results in milk of the uppermost quality. The conditions are perfect to produce amazing cheddars.

The cheeses are made by hand every day of the year, wrapped in cloth and matured for 12-14 months. Each cheese we collect from the farm tastes different from the last as we go through the year. Even with these subtle changes the cheese is always instantly recognisable from its complex flavours and wonderful aroma. It tends to be slightly drier than other cheddar cheeses and occasionally we find some bluing within its creamy paste but that is all part and parcel of this fabulous cheese.

Montgomery Cheddar is wrapped in cloth, not plastic or wax, which is how cheddar used to be made. Once the big wheels are shaped, they’re covered in muslin and brushed with lard. This lets the cheese breathe as it ages, so natural moulds can grow on the outside and the flavours slowly develop. Each wheel changes with the seasons and the way it’s matured, so no two are quite the same.

Protected by PDO Tradition
Montgomery Farmhouse Cheddar is one of a handful of cheddars which is protected under the name ‘West Country Farmhouse Cheddar PDO’. It is a bit of a mouthful, but it’s really all about keeping traditional cheddar true to its roots in Somerset, Devon, Dorset, and Cornwall. To earn the name, the cheese has to be made right there on the farm, using the producer’s own milk or milk from nearby, and following the old cheddaring methods. It’s always clothbound and left to mature for at least nine months, which gives it that wonderful depth of flavour.

Montgomery Farmhouse Cheddar – Jen’s Tasting Notes

The flavour is where Montgomery Cheddar really comes into its own. Think nutty, savoury, a bit tangy, and amazingly complex. Being an artisan cheese every batch is a bit different, which I think makes it even more special.

How to Serve and Pair Montgomery Farmhouse Cheddar
  • Make sure you take it out of the fridge a good hour before you want to eat it so it can come up to room temperature.
  • Classic pairings: A proper West Country Cider is the perfect match to any cheddar.
  • Something a little different: If you’re looking for a glass of wine to go with your Montgomery’s you can’t beat a fruity Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • On the plate: Let’s face it, cheddar is the key ingredient in a ploughman’s lunch – a good wedge of Montgomery, some sourdough bread, salad and pickle.
  • In the kitchen: Montgomery cheddar makes a great mac ‘n’ cheese – especially if it’s got a bit of blueing in the paste to give a kick!

Jen’s note: We had a 6kg wheel of Montgomery Cheddar as the base of our wedding cake, it is my absolute favourite cheddar. If I was ever on Desert Island Discs a wedge of Monty would be my luxury item!
