This chutney bottles the best of British orchards. Lively and gently spiced, it suits almost anything, from a ploughman’s lunch to a modern grazing board. I wouldn’t be without it.
Highfield Preserves consistently excels with traditional British chutneys, and their Bramley Apple & Cider Chutney is a favourite of mine. It’s fresh, fruity, and perfect for a cheeseboard, a ploughman’s lunch, or cold meats. Made in small batches, it really lets the Bramley apples shine, with balanced sweetness and spice, and a gentle hint of cider.
The real star is the Bramley apple; nearly half the jar is filled with them. Bramleys are prized for their tartness and for turning soft and fluffy when cooked. In this chutney, they melt just enough to make it thick and spoonable, while preserving that lovely tangy flavour. This keeps the chutney from becoming overly sweet, which I appreciate.
Onions, sultanas, sugar, and white wine vinegar round out the flavours. Sultanas add sweetness, onions bring savoury depth, and vinegar keeps the taste bright and lively. Cider distinguishes this chutney, adding subtle orchard flavour and enhancing depth with a soft, fruity tang.
The chutney is bright, tangy, and gently spiced. Tart apple leads, followed by sweetness, with savoury onion, warm spices, and a fresh finish. The chunky, rustic texture feels homemade.
This chutney begs to be paired with cheese. The sweet and tangy flavours are perfect with anything salty, creamy, or strong. I always keep a jar ready to go out with a cheeseboard.
Jen’s Note: This chutney also shines with pork pies, roast pork sandwiches, or cold cuts. The tart flavours of the apple cuts through the richness, and the sweetness ties it together.
