Black Bomber hails from the lush valleys of North Wales and has become a favourite with cheese lovers, standing out for reinventing what a classic cheddar can be. Its arrival in the late 20th century signalled a new era in Welsh cheese, drawing attention for boldness and originality. Black Bomber quickly became the defining example of modern Welsh cheese-making.
Black Bomber is made by the Snowdonia Cheese Company, just on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. The story begins in 1985, when three Welsh dairy farmers set out to create cheeses that truly showcased their milk and the Welsh countryside. They aimed for something special and undeniably Welsh. Black Bomber soon stood out with its bold flavour and memorable black wax.
The name Black Bomber reflects its bold, rich character. Many say its punchy flavour and dramatic appearance evoke the spirit of Wales. Over time, it’s become a Welsh cheese icon, now seen everywhere from family fridges to high-end cheese counters around the world.
There’s something satisfying about cutting into that black wax. Inside, you get a golden cheese that looks every bit the classic farmhouse cheddar, smooth, dense, and very inviting. But it’s the taste that really makes Black Bomber stand out.
Black Bomber smells creamy and fresh, with just a hint of earthiness. The texture is spot on; creamy but with a bit of bite. The first taste is buttery and rich, and then you get that lovely cheddar tang. It’s bold but never too much, and there’s a savoury finish that keeps you coming back for another slice.
Some cheddars are too strong, others too mild, but Black Bomber gets it just right. It’s easy to enjoy whether you’re a cheese lover or merely starting out, but there’s still plenty going on if you want to savour it. That balance of creamy and tangy is what makes it so popular. It’s bold but never over-the-top, and interesting without being fussy, not something you find every day.
Jen’s note: Black Bomber’s black wax has become a hallmark of the cheese’s identity, helping it gain attention on cheese counters and shelves worldwide. In essence, the wax not only protects the cheese physically but also symbolises its bold flavour and intrepid spirit.
