Our strongest cheddar is not for the faint hearted! It has that fabulous taste that really hits the back of your jaw as you eat it.

This creamy Somerset cheddar cheese has been made in the village of East Pennard for over 50 years using a family recipe. We go down to the farm once a month to taste and select the cheeses that we are going to sell in the shop. This means that we can ensure that the cheeses have extra strong taste that our customers love. We also get to chat to Jean Turner, the cheesemaker, and learn more about what makes her cheddar cheeses so special.

Gould’s Extra Tasty cheddar has a distinctly nutty flavour with a really strong tanginess. It tends to be a lot creamier than other Somerset cheddars and this is all because of how it is matured in the unique environment that is the Batch farm maturing room. During its 18 month maturation period the cheese takes on flavours and nuances which stem from the farm itself. Some people find this cheese too strong, others would like it to be even stronger, but it is one of the strongest cheddars that we stock. The other contender for this title is Keen’s Extra Mature.
