Godminster Heart takes everything we love about Godminster Organic Cheddar — smooth, creamy and beautifully balanced — and wraps it up in a rather lovely heart shape. Covered in that unmistakable burgundy wax, it makes a brilliant gift, is perfect for Valentine’s Day and looks fabulous on top of a cheese wedding cake. Because sometimes saying it with cheese is better than saying it with flowers.

Godminster Heart Cheddar Cheese

About Godminster Heart Cheddar

Sometimes you want your cheese to taste good. Sometimes you want it to look fabulous too.

Godminster Heart manages both.

Underneath that instantly recognisable burgundy wax is Godminster’s Organic Cheddar, but moulded into a heart shape that has made it particularly popular for gifts, Valentine’s Day and, of course, cheese wedding cakes.

It is exactly the same delicious cheese as the larger Godminster Cheddar, just in a rather lovely smaller package.

Organic From The Beginning

Godminster Farm has been certified organic since 1999, although the move towards organic farming began much earlier under owner Richard Hollingbery.

The cheese is made using organic cow’s milk and traditional Cheddar-making techniques before being matured and eventually covered in that unmistakable burgundy wax.

The wax isn’t just there to make it look pretty. It protects the cheese, stops it drying out and helps retain that smooth, creamy texture that Godminster is known for.

Although when you’ve gone to the trouble of making your cheese heart-shaped, looking pretty is definitely part of the appeal!

Godminster is made with pasteurised milk and vegetarian rennet, making it a particularly useful cheese when I’m putting together a cheeseboard for a group of people with different requirements.

Godminster Cheddar – Jen’s Tasting Notes

Despite the different shape, this is the same Godminster Cheddar you’ll find inside the larger round version.

The texture is dense, creamy and almost fudgy, with a lovely buttery richness followed by a gentle tang and plenty of savoury depth.

There’s a little nuttiness and slight sweetness too, but what Godminster does particularly well is balance. There’s plenty of flavour without anything dominating.

It’s one of those cheeses I can confidently give to someone who tells me they want “a really nice Cheddar, but nothing too strong.”

The heart shape doesn’t make it taste any different.

It just makes it considerably harder to resist.

How to Serve and Pair Godminster Cheddar
  • Make sure you take it out of the fridge a good hour before you want to eat it so it can come up to room temperature.
  • Classic pairings: A good Chardonnay works beautifully. I like one with enough freshness to balance the creamy texture and just a touch of oak to pick up those buttery, nutty flavours.
  • Something a little different: Try it with a good Somerset cider. Cheddar and cider have been keeping each other company for a very long time, and there’s usually a reason traditional pairings stick around.
  • On the plate: Apple chutney is always a winner with Godminster. Onion chutney, tomato relish or a good pickle work brilliantly too.
  • In the kitchen: It melts beautifully and is brilliant in macaroni cheese, toasties, quiches or omelettes. But really… you bought a heart-shaped cheese. Put it on the cheeseboard and show it off!

Jen’s note: We sell loads of Godminster Hearts around Valentine’s Day, but I particularly love them on cheese wedding cakes. Pop one on the top and you’ve got the perfect finishing touch. Flowers are lovely, but personally I’d rather be given a heart made of cheese.
