Fleur des Alpes is a soft, aromatic, gooey French cheese. It can be used to make Tartiflette and is also sometimes used in fondue.
Fleur des Alpes is one of those cheeses that just tastes like winter in the mountains. The name means ‘Flower of the Alps,’ and it does exactly what it says on the tin. The milk comes from cows grazing in those alpine meadows, and you can really taste it. Made in the French Alps, not far from the Swiss border, it somehow manages to pack in all those grassy, floral notes while still being creamy, mellow, and very easy to love.
Fleur des Alpes is made from pasteurised cow’s milk, and the cows spend their time up in the high pastures, munching away on wild herbs, flowers, and grasses. You can really taste all of that in the cheese, it’s what gives Fleur des Alpes its lovely depth and character. We have sourced it as a replacement for our Reblochon PDO which is currently unavailable in the UK.
Fleur des Alpes has its roots in old alpine cheesemaking traditions. For centuries, farmers have moved their cows up to the high pastures in summer, letting them graze on the best grasses and saving the valley fields for winter. It’s a rhythm that’s shaped the cheese for generations.
Cheesemaking started as a way to use up all the extra milk from those summer months. Semi-hard and hard cheeses were especially handy because they kept well through the winter. Over time, these cheeses became a real part of the local culture, shaped by the land and the seasons.
Jen’s note: Fleur des Alpes always reminds me of fresh mountain air and wildflowers, and you can really taste the care that goes into making it. I like it with a bit of bread and a glass of wine, or melted into a tartiflette if I’m feeling cosy. If you fancy bringing a bit of the Alps to your table, this one’s a winner.
