Smooth, supple and full of truffles, this Gouda has it all! The cheese combines the classic creaminess of a young Gouda cheese with the richness of truffles for a mouthful of pure decadence. The unmistakable taste of the truffles really complements this cheese and it is one of our best selling flavour-added cheeses.
Gouda is one of those cheeses that is instantly recognisable. Its gorgeously smooth texture and its traditional plasticoated rind really make it stand out. It hails from the Netherlands and has been delighting cheese lovers for centuries with its creamy texture and nutty flavour. If you take that classic Gouda and add truffles into the mix, you get something really special. Gouda with Truffles is a proper treat; rich, earthy, and a bit luxurious.
Gouda’s story goes back to the 12th century in the Dutch city of the same name. The market square in Gouda was where all the local cheesemakers came to sell their wares. Over the years, cheesemakers have tried all sorts of ageing methods and tweaks, but the essence of Gouda has stayed much the same.
Adding truffles to Gouda is a much newer idea. Truffles have been prized in French and Italian cooking for ages, but popping them into cheese is a more recent twist. It’s the sort of thing that’s become popular as cheesemakers get more creative and adventurous.
Making this cheese isn’t as complicated as you might think. The cheesemakers simply mix in truffle pieces as they make the cheese. The result is a lovely, earthy flavour that sits perfectly alongside Gouda’s creamy, nutty base. Truffle cheeses started popping up in the late 20th century, and now you’ll find Gouda with Truffles on lots of cheese counters.
Gouda with Truffles is a real treat for the taste buds. You get all the creamy, nutty goodness of classic Gouda, plus the earthy, aromatic notes from the truffles. It’s rich, a bit decadent, and there’s always something new to notice with each bite.
The truffles bring in their own earthy, mushroomy character, but they don’t take over. The Gouda still shines through.
Texture-wise, it’s is much like regular Gouda. The cheese firms up and the flavours get bolder with age, but it always manages to be both comforting and a bit of a luxury. It’s the sort of cheese that wins over just about everyone.
Jen’s note: We went to visit the dairy in Woerden where all of our Goudas are made. The intense truffle smell was out of this world! It was amazing seeing the make from start to finish, an experience I’ll never forget.
