Harlech

Harlech Castle sits on a rock, very close to the Irish Sea. It dates back to the 13th Century but it is the role it played during the War of the Roses in the 15th Century that is memorialised in the Men of Harlech song. The Castle withstood a siege for 7 years between 1461 – 1468 when the Lancastrian soldiers eventually gave way to the Yorkist invaders. This is the longest known siege in British history.

Since then it has been the subject of many invasions, indeed during the English Civil War of 1642 it was the last fortification to fall to the Parliamentary Army. Nowadays the castle is a tourist destination, mostly due to its World Heritage Site status.

Croome Cuisine starting making Harlech when the Abergavenny Fine Food Company decided to stop making it.  They have carried on the tradition using the same recipe as the original. These cheeses are made in small batches, using locally sourced milk and the finished cheeses are then waxed by hand to create a truly artisan cheese.
