Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese

£4.65

English Cheese, Goats' Milk, Pasteurised Milk, Vegetarian Cheese

Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese is a little 100g bundle of goaty creaminess. It is a soft, creamy goats’ cheese made in Somerset from the milk of Anglo Nubian goats. The cheese itself is mild yet nutty. As the cheese matures it develops a stronger ‘goatier’ taste, but it is truly best enjoyed when younger.

Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese

About Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese

Somerset has always been known for its dairy farms and wonderful cheeses, and Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese is no exception. The cheese takes its name from a small village nestled in the South West, surrounded by those classic green fields and gentle hills. It’s exactly the sort of place where you’d expect to see goats wandering about, as they have for generations.

The story of this cheese begins at the Cricket St Thomas Estate, which has been part of the Somerset landscape for centuries. It started life as a traditional farm, but at some point, someone had the bright idea to use all that glorious local milk to make goat’s cheese. I’m very glad they did!

No one seems quite sure when Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese first appeared, but it’s likely to have started sometime in the middle of the last century. The cheesemakers made the most of their rich land and their own herd of goats to create something a bit special. As more people across the UK began to look for artisan cheeses, this one quickly found its way onto the tables of both chefs and home cooks alike.

The estate takes real care of the land, and you can tell they want their cheese to reflect the flavours of Somerset. They make it in small batches, so each cheese keeps that unique local character.

The Make
It all starts with milk from the estate’s own goats, who spend their days happily grazing on lush Somerset pastures. The goats are clearly well cared for and enjoy a varied diet of grasses and herbs, which you can really taste in the cheese.
The cheese-making at Cricket St Thomas is all about tradition. The milk is gently pasteurised, and then the skilled cheesemakers get to work, using time-honoured techniques to hand-craft each cheese. The curds are formed and pressed to let the whey drain away, before being placed in moulds. After that, the cheeses are left to mature for just the right amount of time, depending on the texture and flavour they’re after.

Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese  – Jen’s Tasting Notes

Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese is a great choice if you’re new to goat’s cheese, but there’s still plenty to enjoy for the real cheese lovers. It’s creamy and rich, with a gentle tang, and as it matures, you start to notice a bit of earthiness coming through. There’s a clean, citrusy note that lifts the flavour, and the creaminess is balanced by just the right amount of acidity. When it’s young, you can really taste those fresh, grassy notes from the Somerset pastures.

As the cheese gets older, it takes on a more nutty, mushroomy flavour. The tanginess becomes a little stronger, with hints of lemon and herbs. One of the things I really appreciate about this cheese is that it’s not as strong or ‘goaty’ as some others can be. It’s well-balanced and easy to enjoy, whether you’re a seasoned cheese fan or just starting to explore.

How to Serve and Pair Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese
  • Make sure you take it out of the fridge a good hour before you want to eat it so it can come up to room temperature.
  • Classic pairings: If you’re looking for something sparkling, Prosecco is an excellent pairing. The bubbles help cleanse the palate, while the wine’s light fruitiness complements the tangy nature of the cheese.
  • Something a little different: A crisp, slightly sweet cider is a natural partner, cutting through the richness and bringing out the dairy sweetness.
  • On the plate: Fresh figs, grapes, and pears are all wonderful with this creamy cheese. Apples work beautifully too, especially on a cheeseboard. I also love it with slices of fresh baguette, crusty sourdough, or even just a few crackers. Sometimes the simplest combination of bread and cheese is the best way to let the flavours shine.
  • In the kitchen: The richness of this cheese is perfect with prosciutto, salami, or any cured meats; the salty meat and creamy cheese are a lovely combination. Goat’s cheese is also fantastic for cooking. Its smooth, melting texture makes it ideal for tarts, omelettes, and pasta dishes. I like to crumble it into a warm goat’s cheese and spinach quiche, or use it to top a pizza for a creamy, tangy finish.

Jen’s note: Cricket St Thomas Goat’s Cheese is one of those cheeses I always find myself coming back to. It hails from the rolling hills of Somerset, and there’s something about its smooth texture and gentle, layered flavour that makes it a real star on any cheeseboard.
